The National Grid had to turn the power off after the blaze on Edward Street and firefighters from Nuneaton Fire Station were called to the scene.
Flats above a shop in Nuneaton had to be evacuated after a blaze, leaving them ‘filled with smoke’. The residents living above the butchers on Edward Street had to leave their homes due to a fire last night (November 16th).
National Grid had to shut off power in the area as crews from Nuneaton Fire Station attempted to tackle the blaze on the electrical intake box. This was more challenging as the Green Watch crews could not use water to extinguish the fire due to the high voltage and risk of electrocution.
“While awaiting the arrival of the electricity board, crews used extinguishers to control the fire until it was isolated,” said a spokesman for the Newtown Road-based station. “The residents above the shop evacuated as their flat filled with smoke.”
They used CO2 and Dry Powder fire extinguishers to fight the flames. The power was off for several hours, affecting homes nearby.
Residents and businesses alike are being urged to ensure that they have an escape plan. They are also being urged to book a free fire check.
