Firefighters tackle Nuneaton school blaze

Multiple fire crews responded to an accommodation block blaze on the site of a Nuneaton school. It was feared a person may have been trapped inside the burning building on the grounds of Discovery Academy, formerly Manor Park School.

Thankfully, the person was soon accounted for and the crews from Nuneaton Atherstone and Bedworth in attendance could focus on extinguishing the blaze which originated on the third floor of the building in Vernon’s Lane.

“This incident escalated from a fire to a person’s reported fire, warranting an attendance of three appliances and an ambulance,” a Nuneaton Fire Station spokesperson said.

“Eight breathing apparatus were committed to the top floor flat and crews were searching for a missing resident, while firefighting under rapid deployment with an extended hose reel jet and thermal imaging equipment.”

“The person has been accounted for and wasn’t in the building at the time. Fire investigation is underway.” It’s thought the fire, which started at around 5pm last night, could have been caused by an electric heater, the spokesperson said.

The fire was contained in the building of origin. Fire crews were understood to have left the scene by around 8pm, though return visits to the site are expected today.
