Cambridgeshire train fire causes passengers to be evacuated

A train fire in Cambridgeshire on Sunday (May 5) was labelled accidental. A fire and rescue service spokesperson has confirmed. Passengers were evacuated from the train after firefighters were called to the railway near St Neots at around 6:30 pm.

The fire was in one of the train’s coaches. Crews from St Neots, Gamlingay, and Huntingdon attended the incident.

A Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The cause was concluded as accidental electrical.” They added: “There were no persons involved.”

No injuries were reported following the fire. Crews returned to their stations by 7:45 pm after extinguishing the fire.

All lines were blocked between Peterborough and Hitchin while the fire brigade attended, with passengers hit by delays of up to 20 minutes. Electricity to the lines was switched off while the fire was being extinguished, according to a Great Northern spokesperson.

The lines were assessed for damage before reopening at around 7:30 pm. Passengers faced delays until around midnight when normal service resumed.
