EM-Con electrical fire

EM-Con evacuated after electrical fire with hundreds forced out of arena

Hundreds have been evacuated from a huge Midlands convention on Sunday. A fire at EM-Con has led to hundreds of people being evacuated from an arena in Nottingham.

The convention was evacuated as emergency services rushed to the scene. The fire broke out at the Motorpoint Arena during this weekend’s event, branded “The East Midlands biggest popular culture event”.

EM-Con organisers said: “Fire alarm evacuate. Well done in doing it in a safe and timely manner. Thank you the arena staff for dealing with this in a prompt fashion. We will update you as soon as we have information.”

Only 30 minutes later, a second update was published at 2:20pm. The organisers confirmed everyone was safe. They tweeted:  “Everyone is safe, thank you for your understanding and prompt action on leaving the building you made it very easy for @nottinghamarena staff and EM-Con crew.”

“Let’s get back to enjoying our #popculture #comiccon passion.” Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that two fire engines from the London Road fire station were called to the Nottingham Arena just before 1.45pm.

When the fire service arrived, they discovered a small electrical fire which was quickly put out with the help of electricians. The weekend event describes itself as “the best in sci-fi television, comic and book talent”. “Pop on your best ghost-busting boiler suit and get practising your best Dalek voice to impress your favourite characters from Dr Who, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones,” its website says.
