Manchester, the birthplace of the first ever working canal in 1761 and the world’s first railway line in 1830. It is often referred to as the “Capital of the North”. Manchester has loads of reasons why it is as popular as it is, one of those being its rich music history. Whilst neighbours Liverpool was home to the Beatles, Manchester has more than plenty of other talent such as Oasis, The Smiths, New Order, The Charlatans, Take That, The Stone Roses, The Hollies, Aitch, Buzzocks and many many more. The football league itself was also founded in Manchester and now is home to one of the biggest football clubs in the world and also Manchester City. But Manchester United are the most successful club in the country with them holding the record of 20 League titles. They have also won the FA Cup 12 times, the League Cup 5 times and a record 21 Community Shields. They achieved the hardest challenge in football history by achieving the infamous “Treble” in the 1998/99 season.
Manchester was right at the heart of the Industrial Revolution as they became the UK’s leading producer of cotton and textiles. They were also called the first industrialised city in the world. Manchester became known as the world’s largest marketplace for cotton goods and was named “Cottonopolis” and “Warehouse City” during the Victorian era. The Industrial Revolution brought a huge change in Manchester and was key in increasing Manchester’s Population. During the Second World War Manchester was a huge target for bombing due to its high production of war resources at the time. The biggest bombings took place during the Christmas Blitz on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of December of 1940. In these bombings 165 warehouses, 200 business premises, 150 offices and 30,000 houses were either damaged or destroyed.
In 2002 Manchester was the host of the Commonwealth Games, after the event the council was spurred on to put heavy investment into the city. Large areas of the city from the 1960s were demolished and redeveloped or modernised with the use of glass and steel.
