fire in Derby city centre

The cause of fire in Derby city centre confirmed after investigation

Police cars and a fire engine were spotted in a busy street in Derby city centre over the weekend. On Sunday afternoon (September 1st), fire crews were spotted attending a blaze at a property near The Spot on Osmaston Road, opposite the Tortilla restaurant.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue has now confirmed the cause of the fire following an investigation. A spokesperson for the service said: “At 11:40 am on Sunday, September 1, firefighters were called to a fire at a commercial building on Osmaston Road, Derby.

“Fire crews from Kingsway and Nottingham Road attended the incident. On arrival, firefighters were met with a fire on the ground floor of the building. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire and ventilated the property due to smoke.”

Following an investigation by firefighters, the blaze’s most likely cause was an accidental electric fire. Crews remained at the scene for around an hour and left at 12:41 pm.
