Northampton
Northampton, the location of the world-famous Silverstone circuit which hosts the British Grand Prix. Silverstone is also the base for Formula One team Aston Martin. Northampton is only a town, but is one of the biggest towns in England. The town has applied for city status in 2000, 2002 and 2022, but failed on all three occasions. Northampton Town are the football club of the town. Their nickname is ‘The Cobblers’, which comes from the town’s shoemaking background.
After the Norman Conquest in 1066, the town rose to national significance. Its geographical location in the middle of England made it a valuable strategic point for the government and a convenient meeting place for political and military events. This led to Northampton Castle being erected by the man who later became Earl of Northampton. The castle was originally made of earth and timber but was later rebuilt with stone.
Northampton was a major centre of shoemaking and other leather industries, although only specialist shoe making companies such as Barker Shoes, Church’s and Crockett & Jones survived. A large number of old shoe factories remain, mostly all now converted to offices or accommodation. Engineering became a major employer in Northampton during the post post-war years.
