Luton

Luton, a town known for its airport, hats and its football club, is situated in the south-east of England in Bedfordshire. Luton is famous for its hat industry. There were several factories in the early 20th century and even in the 70s there were still remnants of the trade in the area. Luton Town F.C. are the largest football team in the area and are known for their bright orange appearance and awkwardly placed football stadium. The Hat industry carries over to the football team as their nickname is “The Hatters”. The Hatters’ most success came in the form of a Football League Cup triumph in 1988.

Luton’s airport was opened on July 16 1938. During the Second World War, the airport was used by the fighters of the Royal Air Force. All commercial activity and just general aviation at Luton resumed during 1952. Luton Airport also played a significant role in the development of package holidays.

As well as hat making, Luton had a large scale Vauxhall Motors factory which was open from 1905. Sadly, production stopped at this plant in 2002 but the head office of the company remains there to this day. Now Luton still does have large firms with either offices or headquarters located here. Such as EasyJet, Impellam Group, TUI, AstraZeneca, Whitbread and Stonegate Pub Company.

What is PAT testing?

PAT testing is where your electrical appliances get routinely tested for safety purposes. PAT testing makes sure that they do not pose an electric shock or electrical fire risk. It is made up of a series of smaller tests; a thorough visual inspection, earth bond and insulation resistance tests.

What kind of businesses need it?

Nearly all businesses should carry out PAT testing. The Electricity at Work Regulations say that the employer should maintain all electrical equipment to make sure it’s safe to use. They frequency that you carry out PAT testing can vary depending on the type of business & the overall risk. For example, construction sites should be tested more frequently than offices.
